Report: Navaira DWI at time of crash

HOUSTON, May 2 (UPI) -- Recently released test results suggest Tejano music star Emilio Navaira was intoxicated when he crashed his tour bus in Texas several weeks ago.

In addition to reporting on the test results, the Houston Chronicle also said Navaira had a prior arrest for driving while intoxicated in 2000.

The 45-year-old singer was seriously injured in March when he was thrown through the windshield of the vehicle he was driving. Six of Navaira's band members were also left injured, although none were as seriously hurt as Navaira was.

Navaira has had brain surgery to remove a blood clot and to relieve pressure from swelling, while another operation was conducted to repair a rupture of an arterial wall in his right lung.

The Grammy Award-winning recording artist is undergoing treatment at a rehabilitation center.

The San Antonio Express-News quoted Navaira's brother as saying he hadn't heard about the March accident's DWI classification.

"Right now, I do not want to comment. I really do not know the details," Raul Navaira told the newspaper. "As soon as I talk to the attorney and see what is going on, maybe I can talk."

Navaira did say his brother was "doing good."

"He is coming along fast," he added.

Pete Doherty to be released from prison

LONDON, May 2 (UPI) -- Troubled British rock star Pete Doherty is scheduled to be released from prison after serving only 29 days of a 14-week sentence, officials report.

The 29-year-old Babyshambles frontman, who has been battling an addiction to drugs for years, was jailed after he failed to adhere to the terms of his suspended sentence for drug possession.

He is due to be released from prison Tuesday, Britain's Sun newspaper said Friday.

A friend told the newspaper Doherty's time behind bars hasn't inspired him to stay sober.

"He's planning to go straight to play a gig -- and then get smashed," the friend claimed. "He wants no business appointments for three days -- so he can really go for it."

The Sun said Doherty's sentence has been cut in half and another 18 days deducted as part of a plan to ease prison overcrowding.

Doherty also got credit for two days spent in police custody.

Nick Cannon's family confirms wedding

LOS ANGELES, May 2 (UPI) -- A relative of Nick Cannon has confirmed the U.S. actor married singer Mariah Carey this week.

Family member Linda Cannon told E! News the couple wed but offered little other information.

"Yes, we know," she said. "He called us and told us all about it. We are happy for him. If that is what he wants then we are happy for him. ... I'm not going to give you any details but we are happy for him."

Latina magazine reported Thursday that the pair had wed in a small ceremony Wednesday. Subsequent media reports said the nuptials took place at Carey's new home in the Bahamas.

A representative for jeweler Jacob & Co. told E! Online Cannon paid $2.5 million for the 17-carat ring Carey recently was seen wearing on her left hand.

Usmagazine.com said Carey, 38, and Cannon, 27, started dating when he directed the music video for her song "Bye Bye" in late March.

Daily Mail apologizes to Presley

LONDON, May 2 (UPI) -- Britain's Daily Mail newspaper has published an apology to Lisa Marie Presley for remarks it made about the U.S. singer's weight.

Presley, who is the daughter of late rock 'n' roll icon Elvis Presley, said media speculation about her recent weight gain forced her to announce her latest pregnancy before she was ready.

"On March 4, we published a photograph of Lisa Marie Presley while she was dining with friends. We suggested she might have an unhealthy appetite similar to her late father," the newspaper said in a statement. "We now accept that the suggestion is untrue and apologize to Ms. Presley for any distress caused."
