Afghanistan bans 'The Kite Runner' film

KABUL, Afghanistan, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Afghanistan's Culture Ministry has reportedly banned the release of "The Kite Runner," a controversial film set in the country.

Although Latif Ahmadi, the director of the state-run Afghan Film company -- the country's authorized importer of movies -- confirmed the ministry's ban to the International Herald Tribune, he offered no explanation for the reasons behind the decision to prohibit movie houses from showing the film.

Ahmadi did, however, acknowledge "some of the film's scenes will arouse sensitivity among some of our people."

Paramount Pictures, the film studio that released "The Kite Runner," helped the movie's four young actors flee Kabul to the United Arab Emirates for their own safety late last year.

It was feared the boys could be targeted for reprisal because of the film's portrayal of a culturally inflammatory rape scene.
