Jimmy Lee Sudduth dies at 97

FAYETTE, Ala., Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Folk Artist Jimmy Lee Sudduth, who used Alabama mud in his paintings, has died at a Fayette, Ala., nursing home at age 97.

The African-American artist was known for his textured paintings made with his homemade paint -- which consisted of mud blended with soot, axle grease, sugar, coffee grounds and more -- The New York Times reported.

Sudduth often painted on scrap lumber, sheet metal and plywood, depicting everyday life in Alabama.

Today his paintings can sell for from anywhere between several hundred dollars and $5,000, said Susan Mitchell Crawley, the associate curator of folk art at the High Museum in Atlanta.

Sudduth -- whose name was alternately spelled "Jimmie" -- was among the folk artists' whose work was prominently displayed when the House of Blues opened in Los Angeles in the 1990s.
