LONDON, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Words of wisdom from Hollywood cartoon character Homer Simpson have made it into a new Oxford dictionary of quotations, The Sun newspaper said Wednesday.

Chosen to share space with passages from celebrated writers like Oscar Wilde and George Bernard Shaw are Homer-spun gems like: "Kids, you tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is never try."

Also making the cut was “The Simpsons” patriarch’s parenting tip to shopkeeper Apu: "Kids are the best, Apu. You can teach them to hate the things you hate. And they practically raise themselves, what with the Internet and all."

"Eat my shorts," the phrase immortalized by Homer’s son, Bart, was already listed in a previous edition of the Oxford Dictionary of Modern Quotations.

The entries are credited to "Simpsons" creator, Matt Groening.
