Initially hired at the Canadian Opera Company as chief conductor, Bradshaw became artistic director in 1994 and was named general director in 1998. He was known for adventurous programming, which included hiring stage and screen directors as a way of making opera more appealing to younger audiences.

Before moving to Toronto, he was chorus director at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera in England and resident conductor of the San Francisco Opera.

Bradshaw is survived by his wife, Diana.
