Princess Diana memorial concert kicks off

LONDON, July 1 (UPI) -- Elton John and Duran Duran were a smash hit at Princes William's and Harry's tribute to their late mother at London's Wembley Stadium.

The tribute to Diana, princess of Wales, was kicked off by Elton John with a rendition of "Your Song," the BBC reported Sunday. There were about 63,000 fans in the stands to see the concert, intended to celebrate Diana's life, on what would have been her 46th birthday.

The concert also marks the 10-year anniversary of princess Diana dying in a car crash in Paris in 1997.

While introducing Duran Duran, the princes said the concert was about "all that our mother loved in life."

Also part of the concert festivities were 1980s stars such as Joss Stone, Lilly Allen, James Morrison, Keifer Sutherland, The Feeling, Nelly Furtado and, for a change of pace, the English National Ballet.
