Filming in Germany? Mission impossible!

BERLIN, June 26 (UPI) -- German officials won't allow Scientologist Tom Cruise to film his new movie, "Valkyrie," in Germany because they consider him to be a member of a cult.

The World Entertainment News Network said Tuesday that Cruise has scrapped plans to shoot his movie on German military bases because the government doesn't recognize the Church of Scientology as a religion.

"(Producers) will not be allowed to film at German military sites if Count Stauffenberg is played by Tom Cruise, who has publicly professed to being a member of the Scientology cult," Harald Kammerbauer, spokesman for Germany's Defense Ministry, was quoted by World Entertainment News Network.

"In general, the Bundeswehr (German military) has a special interest in the serious and authentic portrayal of the events of July 20, 1944, and Stauffenberg's person."

In the film, Cruise plays Col. Claus von Stauffenberg, architect of a plot to kill Adolf Hitler.

Cruise is also executive producer of the thriller, which will be directed by Bryan Singer, who also directed "Superman Returns" and "X-Men."
