Composer Oskar Morawetz dead at 90

TORONTO, June 16 (UPI) -- Canadian classical music composer Oskar Morawetz has died in Toronto at age 90.

Morawetz, who was one of Canada's most well known classical composers and has won two Juno awards, was known for his lyrical melody and lively rhythms, The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Morawetz wrote more than 100 orchestral and chamber works spanning a 50 year career, including "Carnival Overture, Memorial to Martin Luther King and Prayer for Freedom."

"Fellow musicians will surely remember his encyclopedic memory of the classical music literature and his resolve to compose from his heart rather than be swayed by current trends," said Claudia Morawetz, the composer's daughter.

Morawetz gave his final performance as a pianist in 1992. He retired in 1995 due to illness.
