BBC, Bowie, Guardian win Webbys

NEW YORK, June 6 (UPI) -- The BBC picked up three honors during the annual awards ceremony in New York for the Webbys, Internet's answer to the Oscars.

The BBC News Web site picked up Webbys for Best News Web site and the People's Choice Award for online news sites for the third straight year, the BBC reported Wednesday. BBC's Radio 1 site earned Best Radio Web site accolades.

Other winners included singer-actor-showman David Bowie and auction site eBay, each receiving Lifetime Achievement Awards during the ceremony. Bowie received a standing ovation as he accepted the award for "setting the standard for how artists interact with their fans online."

The British newspaper, The Guardian, won best newspaper Web site.

The Webbys recognize the best Web sites of the year in more than 100 categories. Winners were selected from nearly 8,000 entries submitted from 60 different countries.
