LOS ANGELES, May 22 (UPI) -- With California hard rockers System of a Down on hiatus, front man Serj Tankian said he is happy to be taking his music to the movies.

Tankian scored portions of the new William Friedkin-directed psychological thriller "Bug," including "Bug Theme," which appears on the soundtrack album for the film.

"I took a shot at some character compositions, have a different each instrument (represent) each character," Tankian said of his approach. "With, like the main character, who's played by Ashley Judd, I started with piano; to me, that was the character. Then we had cello, which to me is kind of like a man's voice and fit the male character more so.

"So I had each character have an instrument, and they'd come together when the characters come together. It's all kind of subtle and haunting, kind of spacey, which is what (Friedkin) wanted."

"Bug" opens in theaters on May 25. Tankian is also working on his first solo album, which he said he plans to release this fall.
