NEW YORK, April 5 (UPI) -- Former Vice President Al Gore has been named emcee for the opening night gala for the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, it was announced Thursday.

The sixth annual festival will open with seven short films presented by the Save Our Selves campaign that deal with global warming. Gore won an Oscar for his environmental documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth."

"The SOS Short Films Program harnesses some of the world's most creative minds to educate, inform and inspire people across the globe to solve the climate crises," Gore said in a statement. "Premiering the SOS films at Tribeca will ensure that these pieces will be viewed all over the world for years to come."

The festival, running April 25-May 5, will close with "The Gates," an HBO production detailing Christo and Jeanne-Claude's artwork, which featured 7,500 fabric-paneled gates in New York's Central Park in 2005, USA Today reported.
