Austin Music Awards rewards Patrice Pike

AUSTIN, Texas, March 15 (UPI) -- Singer-songwriter Patrice Pike reached the peak of the Austin, Texas, Music Awards, earning five honors, including musician of the year and song of the year.

Pike, who was cut during last year's "Rock Star: Supernova" competition on CBS, was voted the winner in the five categories by readers of the Austin Chronicle, the Austin American Statesman said Thursday.

Pike earned song of the year honors for "Beautiful Thing."

It was also a big night for Ray Benson, whose veteran group Asleep At the Wheel was a surprise winner in the band of the year category during Wednesday's ceremonies.

Shut out were Austin acts with national followings, including Ghostland Observatory, Voxtrot and Spoon. Octopus Project, however, which won five awards, including indie band kudos.

The possibility of The Who's Pete Townshend joining Ian McLagan on stage heated up the awards show, which for the first time in 25 years took place outside the Austin Music Hall. It was at the Austin Convention Center while the hall undergoes renovations.
