Iconic film, TV costumes up for bid

LONDON, March 6 (UPI) -- A London auction house turned into one big dressing room as people attended one of the largest auctions of movie and television costumes in film history.

A "Doctor Who" Timelord costume -- complete with his trademark striped scarf -- sold for about $47,000, or 12 times its estimated value, the Times of London said.

An army jacket worn by actor Arthur Lowe as Captain Mainwaring in "Dad's Army" also sold for more than its estimate of about $1,500, going for more than $6,000.

A cloak worn by Alec Guinness as Obi Wan Kenobi in "Star Wars" had an estimate worth of $96,500 and $115,900. It's still on the block.

Tim Angel, chairman of costume supplier Angels, said the auction at Bonhams in West London came a good time.

"The joy of being in this business is that you know you are creating something that will help an audience immerse itself in a different world," he said. "The flip-side ... is that (the costumes) can never be used in other films or productions ..."
