Allen taps Spanish stars for latest film

BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- Two of Spain's hottest stars -- Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem -- will reunite this summer in Woody Allen's latest project, scheduled to be shot in Barcelona.

It will be the first time the two have shared the screen since 1992, when they were featured in Bigas Luna's "Jamon Jamon." Both had roles in Pedro Almodovar's "Live Flesh" in 1997, but they did not share scenes on camera, The Independent said Friday.

The summer project marks the first time Allen has ventured onto continental Europe. Before making "Match Point" in London two years ago, Allen never filmed a movie beyond his native New York -- with some exceptions, such as scenes from "Annie Hall" that were set in Los Angeles.

Cruz is nominated for a best actress Oscar this year for her role in Almodovar's "Volver" as a mother who returns from the dead to fix things she couldn't correct in life.

Bardem was nominated for best actor in 2000 for his portrayal of the gay Cuban writer Reinaldo Arenas in Julian Schnabel's "Before Night Falls."
