In-house studio helps boost NBC's ratings

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Break-out hit "Heroes," which helped NBC rise from the ratings bottom, is earning respect for the network's in-house Universal City, Calif., unit.

Now NBC Universal Television Studio is working to ink development deals with writer-producers to create more hoped-for good news for the network, the Los Angeles Times said. NBC moved from last place to a three-way tie with ABC and CBS for No.1 in young-adult viewers this season.

David Shore, who created Fox's hit drama "House," is working on a pilot for an NBC series about a cynical female cop. The studio announced last week it lured Hank Steinberg, creator of CBS' missing-persons drama "Without a Trace." NBC also inherited a number of writers, largely attached to the "Law & Order" franchise, after it completed its merger with Universal.

Studio President Angela Bromstad said NBC wants to pursue a couple of more high-profile producers as well, which may blunt reports belt-tightening last year crimped NBC's development plans.

"In all the years I've been at NBC or GE, money has not been a problem," she said. "Whenever I've really wanted something, I've gotten it."
