WASHINGTON, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- Twenty-five films, some obscure as "Traffic in Souls" and others as well known as "Rocky," were added to the U.S. Library of Congress' National Film Registry.
The list includes familiar hits such as "Rocky," "Groundhog Day," "Fargo" and "Halloween," which will all be permanently preserved by the library.
A number of other films aren't so well known and date back as far as "Traffic in Souls" from 1913, and a 1929 work that Librarian of Congress James Billington said included the only known footage of jazz great Bessie Smith. They, however, will receive the same treatment as the famous pictures
"The Registry should not be seen as The Kennedy Center Honors or The Academy Awards," Billington said in a Library of Congress news release. "Rather, it is an invaluable means to advance public awareness of the richness, creativity and variety of American film heritage, and to dramatize the need for its preservation."
Billington made his selections from about 1,000 nominations made by the public.
