Carpenter's 'The Thing' set for remake

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Director John Carpenter's extraterrestrial thriller, "The Thing," is set to join the ranks of Hollywood movies getting the update treatment.

The 1982 film about a shape-shifting alien in the Antarctic will be remade by Universal Pictures and Strike Entertainment, said Daily Variety.

Carpenter's film was itself a remake of the 1951 classic, "The Thing from Another World" -- which took its inspiration from the 1938 short story "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell Jr.

Producers attached to the new film said the new project will not be an identical copy of Carpenter's creation, but will use similar elements.

The remake follows new adaptations of Carpenter films "The Fog," "Assault on Precinct 13" and "Halloween."
