ABC's 'Brothers & Sisters' a surprise hit

BURBANK, Calif., Nov. 13 (UPI) -- "Brothers & Sisters" has become a surprise hit for the ABC network as the family drama has overcome internal strife to get respectable U.S. TV ratings.

While the set of the new series has been beset by casting changes and internal feuds even before episodes began airing, "Brothers" has survived the chaos to average 13.2 million viewers for the ABC network this season, the Los Angeles Times reported.

With series producers receiving an order for additional episodes from ABC last month, "Brothers" has already overcome the full season hurdle that most new series ever fail to clear.

Series creator Jon Robin Baitz described the show's auspicious beginning as nearly insurmountable, yet somehow the show's cast and crew have managed to find success with "Brothers."

The Times said the series, that stars former "Ally McBeal" lead Calista Flockhart, can offer thanks to its Sunday night lead-in series, ABC's unequivocal hit "Desperate Housewives."
