Liberty's Malone backs cable-movie studio

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Nov. 13 (UPI) -- U.S. cable television giant Liberty Media has formed a production company that will create content for the Starz cable movie channels.

Liberty Chairman John Malone teamed with Danny Rosett and Chris McGurk to form Overture Films, which plans to produce eight to 12 features for Starz.

Beverly Hills' Overture has a bankroll of $500 million to cover production, marketing and overhead, The Los Angeles Times said Monday.

The business plan focuses on content for demographic niches, such as Latinos, African-Americans and older women.

McGurk and Rosett will run the new shop, which has industry analysts telling the Times that Overture has a good shot at success in the rough-and-tumble picture business.
