Celebrations focus on Bennett's career

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- The expansive career of singer Tony Bennett has been the focus of a series of gala events in both New York and Hollywood.

Since the music great celebrated his 80th birthday in August, Bennett has been the keynote guest at a star-studded New York party, a gala at Hollywood's Kodak Theater and now will be the focus of a Nov. 21 NBC special, said USA Today.

In what fellow singer Stevie Wonder termed "the longest birthday I've ever heard of," the celebrations have included appearances from film actor George Clooney, Playboy founder Hugh Hefner and music mogul Quincy Jones.

Clooney especially had positive words for the "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" singer, given the fact Bennett helped his aunt, singer Rosemary Clooney, back in the 1960s and gave the actor a job as his driver, USA Today said.

"You gave her the last 25 years of her life," Clooney said to Bennett at the New York gala.
