New Rock and Roll Hall of Fame hopefuls

CLEVELAND, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- Nine acts, including R.E.M., Van Halen and Patti Smith, have been nominated to be enshrined in the Cleveland Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Also vying for a spot in the U.S. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame are The Stooges, the Dave Clark Five, Chic, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Joe Tex and the Ronettes, Billboard.com reported Monday.

Five of the nominees -- to be chosen in January -- will be put into the Hall of Fame.

The 2007 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction will be March 12 at New York's Waldorf Astoria Hotel.
