British DJ's estate is record collection

LONDON, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- The family of longtime British disc jockey John Peel is hanging on to his estate of literally thousands of records, at least for the time being.

The ultimate fate of the collection remained up in the air some two years after Peel's death, although there has been speculation it will wind up in the custody of the British Library.

"We've not had any discussions about what is going to happen to the collection in the long term," Peel's daughter, Alexandra, told the Daily Mail Monday. "For the present, it will remain at home."

Peel enjoyed a long career on Britain's Radio 1 that began in the 1960s after a stint in the United States. Eschewing Top 40 playlists to focus on progressive album cuts, Peel amassed a record collection of an estimated 25,000 vinyl albums and countless singles and CDs before his death in 2004 at the age of 65.

The British Library declined to say if it was discussing acquiring the collection with the Peel family.
