Mirren wins raves at Vencie for royal role

VENICE, Italy, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- A new film that deals with the aftermath of Princess Diana's death in which Helen Mirren portrays Queen Elizabeth will debut at the Venice Film Festival.

The British Broadcasting Corporation reported Saturday that the actress has created such an admirable stir at the ongoing event that she is believed to be a shoo-in for an Oscar nomination.

The BBC says that Stephen Frears' film suggests the stone-faced Queen actually went so far as to consider abdication as she struggled to cope with the public's grief and her role in it.

Dame Helen, 61, won an Emmy award this week for her role as Queen Elizabeth I in a Channel 4 mini-series.

"The Queen," which is a British-made film, is competing for the main honor at the festival, the Golden Lion.
