NEW YORK, July 31 (UPI) -- Singer Shakira and the Red Hot Chili Peppers each garnered seven nods to lead the field of MTV Video Music Awards nominees announced in New York Monday.
The VMAs will be handed out Aug. 31 in New York in a ceremony broadcast live on MTV.

Shakira earned her nods for "Hips Don't Lie," the magic video for the Peppers was "Dani California" and Madonna chalked up five nominations for "Hung Up."
Panic! At the Disco garnered five nods for "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" and Christina Aguilera got nominations for "Ain't No Other Man."
Among the acts scheduled to perform live during the ceremony are Justin Timberlake, Panic! At the Disco, rappers T.I. and Ludacris, Beyonce and The Killers, MTV said in a news release.
