National Enquirer guarding its reputation

LOS ANGELES, July 21 (UPI) -- The National Enquirer says publicists for singer Britney Spears and actress Kate Hudson are falsely accusing the U.S. tabloid of inaccurate reporting.

Stories claiming that Spears was ready to divorce husband Kevin Federline and that Hudson was dangerously thin never ran in the National Enquirer published in the United States, TMZ.com reported.

Those stories only ran in Britain and were retracted. The British National Enquirer has issued apologies to Spears and Hudson.

The U.S. tabloid said the accusations are unfairly hurting the Enquirer's reputation. But Marty Singer, an attorney for both stars, says the National Enquirer in both countries "are one in the same."

American Media owns both papers, and both carry many of the same stories.
