'Rings' musical coming to London

LONDON, June 23 (UPI) -- The expansive theater production of J.R.R. Tolkiens's epic "The Lord of the Rings" is set to open at London's Theatre Royal next June.

Daily Variety reports that the producers of the $24 million production of the Middle Earth trilogy have chosen London as its next locale, beating out Germany to be the location for the production's European debut.

Produced by Kevin Wallace, the large scale performance features over 50 actors, 90 musicians and crew, and sets so expansive that they only three London theaters could fit them.

"It's a hybrid," Wallace told the Guardian about the three-hour show, "A musical play performed on an operatic scale with a lot of physical theater."

The theater production of "LOTR," which made its world premiere earlier this year in Toronto, has Wallace saying that its British audiences will be pleasantly surprised.

"This is not a singing, dancing hobbit musical," the producer said.
