Duke celebrates 85th birthday quietly

LONDON, June 10 (UPI) -- The Duke of Edinburgh celebrated his 85th birthday quietly Saturday, indulging in his favorite pastime of carriage-driving at his Windsor Castle in England.

He said he wanted to keep things low-key so that attention is not diverted from the queen's 80th birthday celebrations, Sky News reported.

A 41-gun salute was fired at midday in Hyde Park by the King's Troop in his honor.

Prince Philip was born on June 10, 1921 -- the youngest child and only son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg.

Public celebrations of the duke's personal milestone will take place next week.

Thursday, the duke will join the queen at a national service of thanksgiving at St Paul's Cathedral to mark her official 80th birthday. The Massed Bands of the Royal Marines will then perform a Beating Retreat on London's Horse Guards Parade.

The royal couple celebrates their 60th wedding anniversary next year.
