Long lost film recovered and restored

TURIN, Italy, March 16 (UPI) -- A 1914 movie considered to be Italy's greatest silent film -- "Cabiria" -- has been reconstructed and will be shown at the Cannes Film Festival.

Five percent of the epic film is missing in the version put together by experts at Italy's National Cinema Museum from rushes found in a Turin basement, ANSA reported.

The restored 3-hour-plus version will premiere Monday in Turin. Then the film travels to Cannes for the May, its first stop on a world tour, ANSA said.

Director Giovanni Pastrone made the silent film in 1914 and followed it with a sound version in 1931.
