NEW YORK, March 14 (UPI) -- Donald Fagen doesn't have to be in Steely Dan to make records.
The new "Morph the Cat" is Fagen's third solo album, and first since 1993's "Kamakiriad." The singer-keyboardist started making the album in August of 2004, when he says he and Steely Dan partner Walter Becker decided to take a break from the band.
"After the 'Everything Must Go' album, we decided to take some time off," Fagen explains. "I'd been collecting a song here and there over the past couple of years that I wanted to do. I finally had enough, so I decided it was time to do an album."
Fagen, who used many of the players from Steely Dan's live band for the album, has launched his first-ever solo tour to promote "Morph the Cat." He'll tour into the summer, when he plans to reunite with Becker for some full-scale Steely Dan shows.
