Fans long on cash at Short auction

NEW YORK, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- Bobby Short fans packed Christie's auction house in New York to grab memorabilia that belonged to the late cabaret star.

An anonymous bidder paid $132,000 Thursday for the black-lacquered Bechstein grand piano Short sat behind for decades at the Carlyle hotel, the New York Post reported Friday.

Two framed Cole Porter autographs sold for $11,400; a monogrammed silver ice bucket garnered $18,000 and a writing desk sold for $4,800.

A total of $777,720 was paid for 250 items -- more than double the amount predicted by Christie's officials, the newspaper said.

Short died more than a year ago at age 80.
