LOS ANGELES, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- Detroit hip-hop producer MC Jay Dee, also known as J Dilla, died Friday in a Los Angeles hospital at age 32.

Kidney and liver failure were both cited as cause of death, AllHip.Hop.com and SOHH.com reported.

The founding member of Detroit's Slum Village and member of the production team for A Tribe Called Quest, also worked with Kanye West, Ghostface Killah, Busta Rhymes, Common, De La Soul, D'Angelo, Erykah Badu and The Pharcyde.

The rapper, born James Yancy, told Urb magazine in 2004 he developed kidney problems as a result of malnutrition.

"What happened was that the doctor told me that I'd ruptured my kidney from being too busy and being stressed out and not eating right," he said. "He told me that if I'd waited another day, I might not have made it."

Jay Dee's latest solo album, "Donuts," was released earlier this week.
