LOS ANGELES, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- U2 was a big winner at the Grammy Awards Wednesday night, taking the album of the year honors for "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb."
Earlier, "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb" was named best rock album in the Los Angeles ceremony.
Green Day's "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" won the record of the year award, while John Legend was named best new artist.
Still with U2, the group's "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own" won for song of the year.
Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" won for best female pop vocal performance, and her "Breakaway" won for best pop album.
Legend also walked away with the best male R&B performance for "Ordinary People."
Earlier, Mariah Carey won three Grammys during the non-televised portion of the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.
Carey led the field -- along with Kanye West and Legend -- with eight Grammy nominations for her comeback album, "The Emancipation of Mimi." She won for best contemporary R&B album, female R&B performance for "We Belong Together" and best R&B song, The Hollywood Reporter said.
West won during the afternoon for best rap solo performance for "Gold Digger" and best rap song, "Diamonds from Sierra Leone."
Legend's debut album "Get Lifted" was named best R&B album.
Stevie Wonder, nominated for six Grammys this year, won two awards Wednesday. He won for best male pop vocal performance for "From the Bottom of My Heart," and best R&B performance by a duo or group with Beyonce Knowles for their duet on "So Amazing."
U2 also won two Grammys Wednesday afternoon -- best rock duo or group performance for "Sometimes You Can't Make It on Your Own" and best rock song for "City of Blinding Lights."
