American Music Awards nods announced

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- The American Music Awards nominations are based on record sales, so it's no surprise Mariah Carey led all nominees announced Tuesday with four nods.

Carey received nominations for favorite pop and soul album as well as favorite female singer in the pop and soul categories. Her album, "The Emancipation of Mimi" ruled the Billboard 200 album chart for most of the summer.

Rockers Green Day, rapper 50 Cent and pop singer Kelly Clarkson all received three nominations each.

The nominees in pop/rock, country, soul/rhythm & blues, rap/hip-hop, Latin, alternative, contemporary inspirational and adult contemporary are all based on U.S. record sales.

About 20,000 randomly chosen U.S. residents will vote for their favorites with the winners being crowned Nov. 22 during the 33rd annual American Music Awards at the Shrine Auditorium.

Cedric the Entertainer will be the host for the ceremony broadcast live on ABC.
