Grisham pledges $5M to rebuild Mississippi

TUPELO, Miss., Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Best-selling author John Grisham says he and his wife have established a fund to help Mississippi rebuild in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

The former Mississippi state lawmaker kicked off the fund with a $5 million personal contribution, the Northeast Mississippi Daily reports.

Grisham said he and his wife, Renee, will make the $5 million deposit at BancorpSouth in Tupelo as soon as the bank opens Tuesday.

"We don't normally publicize gifts. It's something we keep extremely private," he said during a Friday conference call. "But in these very, very rare circumstances -- this tragic time -- we hope the gift will get some attention and inspire other people to contribute money and help our fellow Mississippians on the Gulf Coast."
