Yachtsman opens Guernsey marina

ST. PETER'S PORT, England, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Yachtsman Sir Chay Blyth celebrated the reopening of a marina on the island of Guernsey, saying it is one of the few in the world with its own character.

As he cut the ribbon for the Beaucette Marina, Blyth looked back on almost a half-century of sailing there, the Guernsey Press reported.

"I have sailed into the Beaucette Marina with a 54-foot yacht and an engine which would not start, which was quite amusing," he said. "It's a real hurricane hole and it has got fabulous anchorage."

Guernsey is one of the Channel Islands, a group of semi-autonomous islands near the French coast where the British subjects speak French.

In addition to winning yacht races, Blyth organizes them, including the British Steel Challenge and the BT Global Challenge.

Niall Rhys Evans, the marina's new owner, said he was honored to have Blyth at the opening.
