Mindy McCready hospitalized after overdose

TAMPA, Fla., July 26 (UPI) -- Troubled country singer Mindy McCready is in intensive care in a Florida hospital after an apparent suicide attempt, it was reported Tuesday.

McCready's mother, Gail Inge, told the Fort Myers (Fla.) News Press her daughter is "very despondent." And Dennis Tomlin, who had been McCready's attorney until Monday afternoon, said she was in intensive care.

The Tampa Tribune quoted Pinellas County sheriff's authorities saying McCready, 29, took large amounts of two substances and alcohol and passed out in the lobby of a Tampa-area hotel Friday.

Country singer William McKnight, 39, was with her and told authorities he was McCready's finance, the Tribune said. McKnight is free on $130,000 bail on Nashville charges of criminal homicide and aggravated battery for an alleged attack on McCready earlier this year.

Florida deputies said McKnight told them the couple had been having "relationship problems" and gave them a four-page suicide note allegedly written by McCready, the Tribune said. Its contents were not revealed.

McCready has had legal troubles of her own, mostly stemming from substance abuse. She still faces trial for a May driving under the influence charge in Tennessee and last year pleaded guilty to fraudulently obtaining Oxycontin from a pharmacy.
