NEW YORK, April 22 (UPI) -- Designer Donatella Versace admits that she was hooked on cocaine for 18 years.
Versace told Vogue Magazine that she gave up drugs for a while after her brother, Gianni, was murdered in 1997. But she said that she went back to cocaine and starting mixing it with prescription medication.
In an interview published in the May issue, Versace said that she decided to get off cocaine when some friends set up an intervention at her daughter's birthday party last year. She spent five weeks at a rehabilitation center in Arizona.
Versace said that she did not recognize she had an addiction while the drug was giving her confidence and helping her overcome self-hatred.
"Cocaine used to be a lot of fun," she said. "I had the best time of my life."
