Simone Simon, 'Cat People' star, dies

PARIS, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Simone Simon, the French actress who starred in the 1942 cult horror hit "The Cat People," has died in Paris at age 93, the BBC reported Friday.

Born in Marseille, Simon began her career as a model before coming to the attention of Hollywood studio head Darryl Zanuck. She appeared in 11 movies, including 1937's "Seventh Heaven" opposite James Stewart.

But, most of her films were unremarkable and she became discenchanted with Hollywood, returning to France where she was re-established as an international star in Jean Renoir's "La Bete Humaine" in 1938.

World War II brought Simon back to the United States in the 1940s, where she starred in a series of horror films, topped by "Cat People" and its sequel "Curse of the Cat People."

She made a handful of films in France in the 1950s before retiring in 1956.
