Variety: Disney-Weinstein split near

NEW YORK, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- The Walt Disney Co. might finally sever its partnership with the founders of Miramax Films within days, Daily Variety said Wednesday.

Noting press accounts about the pending split date to the middle of 2004, the paper said the deal for Harvey and Bob Weinstein to leave the company in Disney's hands could be wrapped up this month. However, Variety also cited sources who said the talks could drag on, because Disney is in no rush to finalize a deal.

Whatever the final deal looks like, Variety said it is likely to preserve some sort of relationship between Disney and the Weinsteins. Sources have said the Weinsteins might help market pictures for Disney, operating a company with severely slashed staff and budget.
