PARK CITY, Utah, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- The screening of a documentary about "Deep Throat" is the first time the Sundance Film Festival in Utah has shown hardcore porn.
Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato's "Inside Deep Throat," which has sold out twice at the Library Center Theater in Park City, Utah, is the first NC-17 movie released by Universal Pictures since "Henry & June" in 1990, Daily Variety said Sunday.
And it's the first film that producer Brian Grazer made with his own money.
HBO Films initially put up $1 million for the film but when the budget turned out to be nearly $2 million, Grazer made up the difference.
"I wanted to use 'Deep Throat' to show how culture works," he said. "This film had an impact on everything."
Although it doesn't avoid the defining scene in the 1972 movie, the documentary is less about porn than the ability of a single X-rated film to bring about change. Without "Deep Throat," the film argues, there'd no porn industry, the government would not be fighting obscenity and the sexual revolution would not have taken place.
