Pixies pleased with reunion excitement

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- The Pixies aren't surprised that there's excitement over the alternative rock band's reunion, but they are surprised by how much excitement there seems to be.

"I always knew that it would get some kind of reaction, but certainly this is much better than anticipated," says frontman Frank Black.

Formed in 1986 in Boston, the Pixies released four albums before breaking up in 1992. The group made an indelible impact on the modern rock scene and was cited as an inspiration by the late Nirvana leader Kurt Cobain, among others. The Pixies reunited last fall at Black's suggestion and began performing live again this year.

"The band breaks up and begins to earn its reputation posthumously and a lot of people become fans," Black says. "All those people that heard about the band after the fact are all there now. Enthusiastically."

The Pixies have recorded one new song, "Bam Thwok!," which is available online. The group kicks off a three-month North American tour on Saturday in Bend, Ore.
