Alice Cooper defends 'treason' remarks

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Shock rocker Alice Cooper says his comment that musicians who take a role in U.S. politics are "treasonous morons" was misinterpreted.

"When I said that rock stars doing concerts for presidential candidates were guilty of treason, I clearly said treason against rock and roll, meaning against the spirit of rock and roll, not against the president or the government or the U.S.A.," Cooper said in a statement, MTV.com reported Friday.

"I said that people shouldn't vote for a presidential candidate just because a rock star says so, and that's true whether it's Bruce Springsteen or Alice Cooper," the 56-year-old musician said.

Cooper -- a Republican -- made headlines Tuesday regarding remarks he made about musicians, including Springsteen, John Mellencamp, R.E.M., Sheryl Crow, James Taylor and Dave Matthews, who are supporting U.S. Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry in the Vote for Change Tour.
