George Clinton pleads no contest

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Funk music legend George Clinton pleaded no contest to two drug-related misdemeanor charges in Tallahassee, Fla., it was reported Thursday.

Clinton, 63, was sentenced Wednesday to 200 hours community service and one year of probation for each misdemeanor charge. He was also fined $372 in court costs.

Clinton was arrested in December in a convenience store outside his Tallahassee recording studio.

Police said he had a bag of crack cocaine and a glass crack pipe, the Tallahassee Democrat reported.

A felony possession charge was dropped and instead, Clinton pleaded no contest to the two misdemeanor paraphernalia violations.

It was unclear whether state prosecutors made a deal to drop the drug possession charge in exchange for the no-contest pleas on the two misdemeanors, the report said.

State Attorney Willie Meggs said if the judge had granted a motion to suppress the evidence, the prosecution "wouldn't have had a case."
