Lucasfilm plans full-length animated film

SINGAPORE, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Lucasfilm, founded by Star Wars' creator George Lucas, opened a digital animation studio Tuesday in Singapore to produce films and games for a global audience.

The studio, to be operational by spring 2005, will produce movies, television shows and video games, with the future goal of creating a full-length animated film, Micheline Chau, president and chief operating officer of Lucasfilm, told reporters.

She said the time required to develop an animated film made it unlikely to hit moviegoers' screens until 2008. Chau was quick to say the company had no intention of taking on Disney or Pixar.

"We will be doing animated films, but we are not taking them on. We are complementary; if they're successful we will be more successful because we're all expanding the market," Chau said.

Gail Currey, vice-president and general manager of Lucasfilm Animation, said that films reflect the culture they are made in. "As we bring production in Singapore and build a community here with a global culture, the product will reflect that global culture," she said.
