Prime time Emmy nominees announced

LOS ANGELES, July 15 (UPI) -- The HBO miniseries "Angels in America" led the field with 21 nominations when nominees were announced in Los Angeles Thursday for the 56th prime time Emmys.

HBO's hit drama series "The Sopranos" had 20 nominations, the most for any series. It was nominated for best drama series, along with "Joan of Arcadia" (CBS); "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" (CBS); "24" (Fox) and last year's winner, "The West Wing" (NBC).

"Sex and the City," which ended its run on HBO this year, was nominated for best comedy series, along with "Arrested Development" (Fox); "Curb Your Enthusiasm" (HBO); "Will & Grace" (NBC) and last year's winner "Everybody Loves Raymond" (CBS).

Two long-running comedies that ended their runs on NBC this year -- "Frasier" and "Friends" -- were overlooked in the best comedy series category.

The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences will present the Emmys on Sept. 19 in ceremonies at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, to be hosted by Garry Shandling and televised live over ABC.
