Spileberg, Eastwood to make WWII movie

LOS ANGELES, July 9 (UPI) -- Steven Spielberg and Clint Eastwood will collaborate on a movie about the Battle of Iwo Jima, The Hollywood Reporter said Friday.

Eastwood will direct the project for DreamWorks, from screenwriter Paul Haggis' adaptation of "Flags of Our Fathers: Heroes of Iwo Jima" by James Bradley and Ron Powers.

Haggis is best known as the creator of the Chuck Norris TV series "Walker, Texas Ranger." Bradley based the book on correspondence his father had collected as one of the six U.S. military men who appeared in the iconic photograph depicting the raising of the American flag, during the momentous battle in the Pacific Theater.

Over one month of fighting in 1945, 22,000 Japanese and 26,000 Americans were killed. John Bradley never talked about the experience to his family, but after his death in 1994, James Bradley learned the truth from a cache of letters.

Spielberg and Eastwood previously collaborated on "The Bridges of Madison County" -- Spielberg as producer and Eastwood as director and star.
