Spider-man gets Indian make over

BOMBAY, June 24 (UPI) -- Spider-man has taken on an Indian persona, including a new name and clothes, for a series of comic books launching in India.

Four comic books will be published to coincide with the Indian release of the film "Spider-Man 2," BBC reported Thursday, with the comic book character Peter Parker becoming Pavitr Prabhakar and with the character donning a more modest costume, a dhoti, the loincloth worn by men in India.

The first book is expected to be released in August.

"Unlike traditional translations of American comics, Spider-Man India will become the first-ever 'transcreation,' where we reinvent the origin of a Western property," said Sharad Devarajan, Gotham Entertainment Group chief executive.

The new series will interweave local customs, culture and mystery set against the backdrop of monuments including the Taj Mahal and the Gateway of India. The Green Goblin villain will be replaced by Rakshasa, an Indian mythological demon that has shape-shifting abilities, the BBC said.
