TEHRAN, June 19 (UPI) -- Iran Saturday withdrew an earlier threat to restart its uranium enrichment program.

Iran's chief nuclear negotiator Hassan Rohani told reporters in Tehran that his country has no intention to resume uranium enrichment.

Rohani had already threatened to resume enrichment if the international community continued to accuse it of secretly working to make nuclear weapons.

Iran says its nuclear program is aimed to generate electricity and not to make weapons.

The United States has rejected this claim saying that an oil-rich country like Iran does not need nuclear technology to generate electricity,

According to the official Islamic Republic News Agency, Rohani told reporters that Iran would stick to its earlier decision of not resuming uranium enrichment but a final decision will be taken in a few days.

Earlier Saturday, the United States condemned Iran's threat to restart its uranium enrichment program, saying it "clearly shows" that Tehran has military aims behind its nuclear program.

On Friday, the International Atomic Energy Agency adopted a tough resolution censuring Iran for covering up its nuclear activities.
