HOLLYWOOD, June 18 (UPI) -- Hollywood actor/filmmaker Mel Gibson ranked No. 1 on this year's Forbes Celebrity 100 list, Forbes announced Friday.
The "Braveheart" star and director ascended to the top spot because of the phenomenal success of "The Passion of the Christ."
However, the financial magazine said his standing this year doesn't guarantee he will appear at the top of future lists.
While some high-profile figures like Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey and Tiger Woods consistently make the list of Hollywood's most powerful players, Forbes said most others make only sporadic appearances.
For example, 40 percent of the celebrities on last year's Celebrity 100, including Jennifer Lopez (last year's No. 5) and Ben Affleck (last year's No. 7) have dropped off the list altogether.
Tom Cruise ranked No. 1 in 2001, disappeared the next year, then returned again this year in the No. 4 spot.
Meanwhile, Cruise's ex-wife Nicole Kidman ranked No. 16 last year, then vanished from the list completely this year.
