British Mojo Awards honor musical veterans

LONDON, June 8 (UPI) -- Paul McCartney and Davie Bowie are among the nominees for Britain's Mojo magazine's inaugural awards honoring veteran entertainers.

Mojo editors established the Mojo Honors List awards to recognize older artists who are often overlooked for awards, the BBC reported Tuesday.

"Other awards celebrate the biggest names and the best releases of the preceding year," said Phil Alexander, Mojo's editor-in-chief. "We believe there's long been a need to properly honor the extraordinary talents of the artists, bands and songwriters whose careers have been responsible for enhancing our rich musical culture."

Other veterans to be honored include Morrissey, who has recently returned to the British music charts with a top three single; Elvis Costello; Joe Strummer; Arthur Lee; Johnny Cash; and Ray Davies from The Kinks.

The winners will be announced June 22 at the Banqueting House in Whitehall, London, during a non-televised event.
